Englisgh Bulldog Pricing Explained

Bulldog Pricing
As many of you know when looking around for a bulldog that the first
thing you will notice is the price. At least I did when we first bought ours.
It took me awhile of researching before I realized the reasoning behind
the pricing and I want to share that with you.

The first part of understanding the pricing of a quality bulldog is the
breed itself. Bulldogs are a man-made breed, meaning that less than
5% of the breed can breed on their own. For two reasons really. First of
all
, the size of the Males vs. Females. Males are very wide in the chest
and females are very narrow in the butt. Therefore the females cannot
support the weight of the males to breed naturally. Requiring breeders
to use Artificial Insemination. In order to AI dogs, you have to do
cytology and  progesterone testing as well. If you are buying from a
reputable breeder, they are also breeding to the best stud available.
We fly in semen from Georgia, Tennessee
, Alabama or wherever we
find the best Studs available. The average stud fee alone is $700-$9
00
plus $200 for shipping.  When you consider that doesn't included any of
your testing or vet fees you can start to see why the expense.

The second part of a bulldogs inability to breed on it's own is the size of
the puppies. They are very large
, with huge heads. Most are to large to
be born naturally and have to be taken by c-section. Most breeders
won't even allow their dogs to try to whelp naturally because many
females and/or puppies die trying. We do not try with our dogs. So
, you
also have the expensive of c-sections.

Now, considering what you have in a litter, even after you get a litter
your work is not over. Bulldogs are SO big compared to the pups that
they require around the clock care for at least the first 2 weeks. Mom
gets up and tries to get comfortable and she will lay down right on top
of one and never know it. I don't know how many times I have pulled out
puppies from under Jade
and EB.  I even missed one for about 1
minute( I am constantly counting) and had to do mouth to mouth to safe
it.
They don't mean to hurt them, they just don't feel them. Considering
t
hey are 55-60 lbs to their 4 -12 oz at birth and it's no wonder. If I leave
the room
, they have to also. Therefore, I hardly leave the room! They
do
n't like to leave them and I don't like to make them, except to make
t
hem go to the bathroom.

After the pups are born, the room has to be kept between 75-80
degrees at all times. The puppies cannot regulate their own
temperatures yet. Lots of inexperienced breeders loose pups and
blame it on them being runts or sick... Many deaths can be prevented
just by regulating temperatures and a watchful eye. The pups have to
be weighed everyday, to insure they are all gaining weight. Believe it or
not this can be the easy stage! Once they all get mobile and mom
stops cleaning up after them things get messy!

I just want everyone who thinks that bulldog breeders are out there
raking people over the coals, that there is a lot going into a litter to get
a good quality litter out.

Can you get them cheaper?? Yes, you can and more expensive too.
For the most part I see people who sell them cheap when they aren't
putting the money in for quality bloodlines. If they use the dog down the
street
, that will take a puppy in exchange for the stud fee, no matter
what that dog looks like, or what kind of health problems it has then yes,
you can reduce your costs and sell them cheap. My best advice is to
know the correct
conformation and look at the parents!! All bulldog
puppies are cute and the only way to guess what they will look like
when they get older is by looking at their parents. Ask what type of
health problems they have had. Just so you know our girls have none.
Knock on wood!

If you have any
questions feel free to ask. I don't like pricing our pups
until they are born and I can see their conformations, markings, and
colorings.I can tell you that our pricing is usually between $2000-$2500.
We understand that this is a lot for a dog and therefore we do except
credit cards through Paypal .
